In 2010, I began studying subconscious/spontaneous sketching. The purpose was to explore problem solving of composition and purpose when presented with an unpredicted mark. It’s almost like chiseling at random until a perspective is found.
I would jump on the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA), commute to school, and begin scribbling shapes and motion. Prisma markers were then used to bleed the pen and create more depth.

Here’s a breakdown of my “HEADGEAR” series, inspired from my bike accident back in September. I’ve said many times that these are my first paintings. It’s a half lie, but I consider this more of painting that my previous attempts.
I documented the breakdown so I can learn more about what I did. This was the first time I had a plan of attack, knew what I was doing, followed through, and completed it accordingly (minus inconsistencies).
Recently the community has been getting done just right, as the new year has made way to a year of collaboration. Couple weeks ago Loosey Goosey Zine curated a showcase with California based group Infusion Project.
Now our comrades Jillian Barthold with Ashley Rose Reinsmith and Kady Dennell is moving forward with yet another project called Bearbook.
“bearbook is an art collaboration quarterly in the form of a zine/chapbook sized book that brings artists of all mediums and concentrations together around a common theme. This could include but is not limited to photographers, painters, graphic designers, printmakers, culinary artists, papercutters, fashion designers, writers, etc. The first theme is “teeth” and the book will include 40-50 submissions that all somehow include the artist’s interpretation/incorporation of teeth.”

Asian Student Org (Columbia College Chicago) will be hosting the 5th annual exhibition at Boba Bar Cafe, located in Chinatown. Visitors will have the opportunity to see work of various members of Wild Man Design Tribe (WMDT) and other artists over a panel of musical performances.

This project was adapting a short film by Chris Birkmeier’s Liberum Pictures titled “Donnybrook” into a mini 8 page black and white zine. The story is inspired by William Goldings “Lord of the Flies.” Everything was hand illustrated with pencil stages into ink into digital copies to be printed. This was a fun practice for my story boarding skills as well as adapting images to a visual story. The process of scanning and altering dpi and threshold for optimum printing was very valuable and interesting. Check out the short film on Liberum Pictures Vimeo page here. Recently Wild Man Design Tribe (WMDT) hosted The Summit (pictures will come!!!) where various artists, collectives, clothing lines, zines, and entrepreneur-minded folks got to meet and talk collaboration. Check out Loosey Goosey Zine, as they give a shout to the Tribe.

This cover was actually not chosen to be put on the cover. Another huge injustice against the principles of design. But it’s actually a revision of my original design, so this was submitted a couple weeks after the deadline. but its not like the print ready files have been submitted to the production coordinator yet! Come on! We’re actually going with an illustration of a cat in a space suit drifting through space. ugh* kill me slowly columbia… one cat, one owl, one zombie at a time.

St. Patty’s Day

This piece was created to tell a cloudy story of our favorite holiday St. Patricks Day. This once again went though the stages of writing, thumbs, layout of thumbs, pencils, and eventually inking. The more I practice in this comic and or graphic novel world the more elements I discover. There are so many things to consider when beginning one of these suckers. With the story and wording and pace and placement of text, into the layout of your panels and the flow of the framing of each into one another. Then onto the pencils and what to draw for the viewer and what not to. This is all one cohesive story and each one of these decisions can fuck up the next. My favorite is definitely inking. Just shut off the brain and make the story pop. Stay tuned for more…

Janelle Kroll is a beautiful and talented solo artist who I worked with recently. She approached me with an interest in some work to be done for both self-promotion and an upcoming show. This is the final poster along with some process photos. I have also included some mockup work for some of her singles.
Check out her music video for “She Never” and keep an eye out for some of her upcoming shows including her roll in Steppenwolf’s production of “Want.”
The process of this work involved hand drawn illustrations with pen and ink brought into photoshop. The lovely photos of Janelle were provided for me and took little editing, just some cropping and type treatment.

Throw back from my freshman year of college. I was on an exciting clothing line project that never saw daylight. The company was called Monster Expression (M.E.) as scene in the typemark. When the project fell through I took the logo and did a self initiated collab with myself by Tribin’ it out a lil more.
I think I often find myself missin my Freshman year and how serious my people and I were trying to get down.
LE WHIF AD CAMPAIGN” BY JON REMO This was a mock ad I did for a relatively low key company that makes “breath-able” chocolate. This assignment from my Promotional Graphics course pushed my range of design. It was difficult to apply my style, be even more so to step outside my style.
